Rehabilitation & Various Culture Groups in the United States

Introduction

Community rehabilitation programs (CRP's) serve consumers from a wide range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. It is important to understand the unique background and needs of each consumer. This is best accomplished through dialogue, listening, and observation.
Sometimes it can be useful to read about different racial and ethnic groups as part of a larger exploration. Learning about different cultural groups can help build an understanding of the consumers your agency serves, as well as those who are underserved. There are many excellent web-based resources with descriptions of U.S. and foreign cultures.

Below is a link to selected web-based resources you might find helpful as a starting point. They are written from a health and rehabilitation perspective.

NOTE: Avoid stereotyping. Whenever individuals are categorized according to region, culture, or ethnicity, there is a risk of stereotyping. Stereotyping a consumer can result in misconceptions about his or her unique personal history, belief system, communication style, or health status. Bear in mind that the resources listed here give a broad overview of cultural groups, and do not attempt to describe the full range of individual difference.
