Dr.
James Hinthorne has been a lecturer for the department of Physics
and Geology since the Spring semester of 2008. He is also a
summer lecturer in Geology for Central Washington University.
Dr.
Hinthorne graduated with his A.A. from Palomar College in San
Marcos, California in 1962. He went on to earn his B.A. in Geology
and minor in Math from the University of California in Santa Barbara
in 1965. In 1967, he obtained his M.S. in Geology from the
University of Massachusetts. His thesis topic was "Geology of the
Mt. Tom area, Massachusetts." Dr. Hinthorne obtained his Ph.D. in
Geology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1974.
His dissertation is entitled "Origin of sanbornite and other barium
silicate minerals." Prof. William S. Wise was his chairman.
From
1969 to 1980 Dr. Hinthorne was a Senior Scientist and Manager of the
Methods and Applications Division for Applied Research
Laboratories (ARL) based out of both Santa Barbara and Sunland,
California. While there, he developed instrumentation and software
for commercial systems for electron microprobe, ion microprobe,
X-ray fluorescence, and inductively coupled plasma optical
spectrometry. During his experience with ARL, Dr. Hinthorne would
spend five years analyzing lunar samples and three years as research
and applications department manager where he was responsible for
about 20 researchers, engineers and programmers, and coordination
with three corporate branches in Europe.
Dr.
Hinthorne was a professor from 1980 to 2001, and Chair from 1980 to
1992 for the Department of Geology at Central Washington University
in Ellensburg, WA. During that time he taught courses in Physical
Geology, Historical Geology, Mineralogy, Petrology, Geochemistry,
Field Geology, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Introduction to
Computer Science, and FORTRAN. In addition to working for CWU, he
obtained research contracts for microanalysis of Columbia River
Basalts, developed software for new GIS functions, and gave
instrumental instruction at the Research Institute of the University
of Petroleum and Minerals in Dharan, Saudi Arabia (1985). Dr.
Hinthorne retired from CWU in 2001. Dr. Hinthorne went on to
teach Geology during Summer Session 2007 at Central Washington
University.
