Luis Alfonso
Lopez, bass-baritone, holds a Master of Music Degree in Vocal
Performance from UTPA where he studied under Ruth Crews and Dr.
Richard Davis. He graduated with Honors and is a member of Who’s Who
in American Universities and Colleges, The National Scholars Honor
Society, Golden Key International Honour Society, as well as The
Honor Society Phi Kappa Phi. During his studies he participated in
master classes with vocal coaches Cody Garner and Shirlee Emmons;
performed in the musicals “Newsies” and “Fiddler on the Roof,” the
Children’s Opera “Goldilocks and the Three Bears," and the Zarzuelas
“Luisa Fernanda” and “El Dúo de la Africana,” in which he performed
the role of Giussepini.
Mr. Lopez has performed the roles of Doctor Grenvil in “La Traviata”
and as Page in “Amahl and the Night Visitors” in productions of the
ProCantus Lyric Opera in 2006 and 2007. He has sung as a cantor for
special liturgies at the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle
– National Shrine in Texas in 2007 and 2008. Last year he
understudied the role of Sagrestano and performed the role of
Sciarrone in “Tosca” for South Texas Lyric Opera; he performed as
Musical Director and Conductor for the Musical “She Loves Me;” and
performed on the play “Alice in Wonderland” by André Gregory. This
year he performed selections from the musical “Sweet Charity” with
the Valley Symphony Orchestra. He has performed in the V and VI
Taller de Ópera Juvenil in Mexico where he studied singing with
Mexican Opera singers Yvonne Garza (Soprano) and Arturo Rodríguez
(Bass-baritone), couching with Teresa Rodriguez, movement with Irma
Elena Meza and Alicia Ledesma, and acting with Larisa López and
Leticia López. Additionally he has studied acting with Dr. John
Carroll, and acting coaches Laura Versi and Iván Tula in Mexico.
Mr. Lopez is a member of the Valley Symphony Orchestra and Chorale,
and performs throughout Mexico as a soloist with the Chamber
Ensemble Euterpe. He serves as faculty at the UTPA Music Department
where he teaches Music Appreciation, Voice, Music Theory and directs
Broadway Musicals.
