Justin Writer is Assistant Professor of Music Theory and Composition at the University of Texas-Pan American. Prior to joining the faculty at UTPA, Writer was Adjunct Professor of Music Theory at Oklahoma City University and Adjunct Instructor of Composition and the director of the New Improv! Century Ensemble (N!CE) at the University of Oklahoma. N!CE also worked on solo projects under the alias Justin Writer and The Dissonance. Writer’s music is performed by professional and university ensembles around the country, Europe, and Mexico. Groups that have performed Writer’s works include the October Trio, Crouse Quartet, Levande Musik, Springfield Symphony Orchestra and Chorus (Massachusetts), Wichita State University Wind Ensemble, Emporia State Concert Band, Pittsburg State University Wind Ensemble, Quintet Oklahoma, and Quartetto Saloma. Writer recently signed with ERMMedia to record his chamber orchestra work Sound The F Above Middle C And Then Explode. Release date is expected in late 2009.

 

Awards and honors include ASCAPLUS awards (2007, 2008, 2009), performance at the CMS South Central Chapter (2009), winner of the Wichita State University Contemporary Music Festival Competition (1999, 2000), winner of Levande Musik’s Live Elevator Project (2008), Voxnovus 60X60 Midwest Minutes Mix (2006), work selected for 2009 Nashville Sound Crawl, work selected for the University of Nebraska at Kearney New Music Festival (2007), work selected for the Seventh International Festival of Contemporary Art, Mexico, 2000, Finalist, 1997 BMG National

Young Composers Competition, and Pi Kappa Lambda (1995).

 

Writer received his D.M.A in Composition from the University of Oklahoma, his M.M. in Theory/Composition from Wichita State University, and a B.M.E. from Pittsburg State University (Kansas). Dr. Writer’s principal composition teachers include Marvin Lamb, Walter Mays, Robert Deemer, Katherine Ann Murdock, Evan Hause, and Stephen Andrew Taylor. In addition to composing, Writer continues to occasionally perform on the flute.
