Q: How is Advising different from Counseling?

8/3/2004

A: Academic Advisement focuses primarily on the knowledge and information students need to make wise decisions about academic choices and options. It is different from personal counseling.

Q: Why is advisement so important?

8/3/2004

A: Advisement is important because it contributes to the process of planning for college. It is necessary to ensure that you are in compliance with university policies and are making appropriate decisions about your academic program.

Q: Who do I meet with to get my RAC?

A: All TSI-Not Cleared students get their RACs from The Advisement Center. Also, all Provisional Enrollment Program (PEP) students, whether TSI-Cleared or Not Cleared, get their RACs from The Advisement Center. If you are a TSI-Cleared student and have declared a major then you would meet with an advisor in your major department. If you are a TSI-Cleared student and are undeclared then you would meet with a URAP specialist.

Q: What other populations do you serve?

A: We assist V.A. students with less than 60 hours. We assist Texas Grant students with G.P.A. calculation. We assist probation/suspension students with university policies concerning probation/suspension and with G.P.A. calculation.

Q: What is TSI?

A: In September 2003 the Texas Legislature replaced the Texas Academic Skills Program (TASP) with the Texas Success Initiative (TSI). The TSI program integrates student services and academic components designed to advance the student's transition from developmental education to college-level courses.

Q: What test do I take instead of TASP?

A: You can take the Texas Higher Education Assesment (THEA), ACCUPLACER, ASSET, or COMPASS.

Q: Do I need to take THEA, ACCUPLACER, ASSET, or COMP

A: TSI requires all students to be tested before enrolling in college-level coursework in the areas of reading, math, and writing.
