Answers for Six Course Drop Limit Questions

Rules and policies are currently being finalized. If you cannot answer the student’s question with the information below, have them talk to Mr. Morris (381-2209) and if he is not available to Joni Thomas or Cindy Blanco.

  • Only affects students who first entered college in the Fall 2007 or later.
  • Counts drops received at any state community college, college or university in Texas.
  • Drops from private colleges or out of state or out of country colleges do not count toward six drops.
  • Drops in developmental/remedial courses do not count toward six drops.
  • Concurrent enrollment (high school/college) course drops do not count toward six drops.
  • If Student completely withdraws from all courses, courses do not count toward six drops.
  • If Student drops last course prior to last date to drop this action will be considered to be a withdrawal and previous drops will be changed to withdrawals and will not count toward the six drops.
  • If course has a lecture and a laboratory section only counts as one drop.
  • After the sixth drop the student will not be able to drop a course but will be required to remain on  the class roll; receiving a grade of A, B,C,D,F at the end of the term.

Policy on exceptions is currently being finalized, along with criteria for documenting the following exemptions are included in the law (Documentation will not be required at the time of submission of request for exemption but will be requested on a random number of requests. Exemption will be denied if satisfactory documentation is not submitted in a timely fashion):

  • A severe illness or other debilitating condition that affects the student’s ability to satisfactorily complete the course.
  • The student’s responsibility for the care of a sick, injured or needy person if the provision of that care affects the student’s ability to satisfactorily complete the course.
  • The death of a person who is considered to be a member of the student’s family or who is otherwise considered to have a sufficiently close relationship to the student that the person’s death is considered to be a showing of good cause.
  • The active duty service as a member of the Texas National Guard or the armed forces of the United States of either the student or a person who is considered to be a member of the student’s family or who is otherwise considered to have a sufficiently close relationship to the student that the person’s active military service is considered to be a showing of good cause is considered to be a showing of good cause.
  • The change of the student’s work schedule that is beyond the control of the student, and that affects the student’s ability to satisfactorily complete the course.
  • Other good cause as determined by the University (The Provost Academic Policy Committee is working on defining this exemption.)

New drop form is being developed and will be distributed when finalized and printed.

Student will be able to drop or withdraw during the first 75% of the semester (calendar days from 1st class day through last final-November 14, 2008) and receive a non-punitive grade of ‘DR’ which will count in six course drop or a non-punitive grade of ‘W’ if student drops all courses which will not count in six course drops.
