Master of Arts with a Major in English as a Second Language

In addition to the general requirements stated for the graduate programs, each student must pass two three-hour three-hour written comprehensive exams and submit a portfolio. One is in Theoretical Linguistics, the other in Applied Linguistics. The candidate is allowed to take these exams up to three times during work on the MA degree.

Some courses are offered on a rotating basis. Students should consult the graduate advisor early in the MA programs.

Major in English as a Second Language:   Thesis Option

Major Requirements:   36 Semester Hours
Including a thesis; with the option of taking a total of up to 6 hours in one or more other fields.

ENG 6328Introduction to English as a Second Language
ENG 6329Problems in English as a Second Language
ENG 6350Introduction to Descriptive Linguistics for Teachers

ENG 7300Thesis

Designated Electives 6 hours

Major Requirements:   36 Semester Hours
With the option of taking a total of up to 9 hours in one or more other fields.
