Can I do the Master Reading Teacher certificate program while I’m enrolled in a Master’s degree program?
Yes. Students in the Reading and Literacy M.Ed. program who take Option Three will be eligible to be certified as both Reading Specialists and Master Reading Teachers. Students in other Master’s degree programs such as the Early Childhood M.Ed. program or Bilingual M.Ed. program may also complete requirements for the MRT certificate program. However, they must apply to the MRT program and meet all entrance requirements. Admittance to a Master’s degree program does not mean automatic admittance into the Master Reading Teacher certificate program.
What’s the difference between the Master Reading Teacher certificate program and the Reading and Literacy M.Ed. program?
The Master Reading Teacher certificate program DOES NOT lead to a degree. Students who successfully complete this program will be eligible to take the state of Texas Master Reading Teacher exam. Once this exam is passed, the student can be certified as a Master Reading Teacher.
The Reading and Literacy M.Ed. program is a degree program. Students who successfully complete all program requirements will earn a Master’s degree. Students in Option Three will also be eligible to take the Reading Specialist TExES exam. Option Three students who graduate and pass the Reading Specialist TExES can be certified in the state of Texas as K-12 Reading Specialists and Master Reading Teachers.
