Master's Degree in Bilingual Education Program Description
A central goal of educators is to provide equitable educational opportunities to all children, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, language, culture, or socioeconomic status. Diversity in all educational programs must be perceived and embraced as educational opportunities for the enrichment of all children, instead of liabilities (deficiencies) that must be corrected. One of the most controversial programs, bilingual education, is committed to this goal.
This innovative and unique master’s program in bilingual education is designed to develop master teachers with a thorough understanding of effective enrichment bilingual education programs and practices that would not only meet the educational needs of Spanish speakers, but would also provide bilingual/biliterate/bicultural enrichment opportunities for all children. This master's degree program, unlike many others, prepares "dual experts" in several areas to promote and support enrichment bilingual education related to supporting fields. Students select from one of the following five specialization areas:
Reading Education
Early Children Education
Special Education
Gifted and Talented Education
Educational Administration (may lead to principal certificate, and must meet entry requirements to Educational Leadership Program)
The Master of Education in Bilingual Education program is offered through the Department of Curriculum & Instruction and a new cohort of students begins every fall semester. All required course work is offered at University of Texas-Pan American.
The official degree would consist of 18 hours in bilingual education, 15 hours in selected specialization area, and 6 hours in research, measurement and evaluation.
The completion of the Masters degree is a total of thirty-nine (39) hours. Students would have an option of writing a thesis or non-thesis for final degree completion.
