Dr. Carmen Peņa is originally from San Antonio, TX, where she attended the University of Texas
at San Antonio on the Baumberger Endowment (full-four year scholarship) and graduated with a
Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. She then attended St. Mary’s University and earned a
Master of Science degree in Experimental Psychology. While completing her Master’s degree,
she was employed by the Armstrong Laboratory/Human Resources Directorate and published several
articles in cognitive psychology in such journals as Intelligence, Learning and Individual
Differences and Journal of Educational Psychology. After completing her M.S. degree she earned
a fellowship to attend the University of Iowa where she earned a Ph.D. in Instructional Design
and Technology. She was a Visiting Professor at Iowa for one year and then moved to Houston,
where she was offered a position as an Assistant Professor in the instructional technology
department. Following her position at the University of Houston Clear Lake, she moved to
Mission, TX to join her husband who had been offered a position with the U.S. Border Patrol.
Dr. Peņa and her family now reside in Mission, and she is an Assistant Professor in the
Secondary Education program at the University of Texas Pan American. She has published
several articles on online learning in teacher education and electronic mentoring of preservice
teachers and maintains an active research agenda involving the integration of technology in
teacher education.
