Academic
Positions
Assistant Professor. August 2003 - Present. The University
of Texas - Pan American, Edinburg. Areas of Specialty: Vertebrate
Physiological Ecology and Herpetology
Teaching Responsibilities: BIOL1402 - General Biology II, BIOL2402
- Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy (Spring and Fall), BIOL4309/5309
- Herpetology (Spring), BIOL4311/5311 - Ecological Physiology
(Fall).
Postdoctoral Associate and Assistant to the Director.
August 2002 to July 2003. The University of Florida, Gainesville
and Seahorse Key Marine Laboratory. Advisor: Harvey B. Lillywhite.
We are investigating the ecology and physiology of the interactions
between nesting birds and snakes on Seahorse Key (an insular ecosystem
that is both water and food limited). In addition to the research,
I provided support to the director (H.B. Lillywhite) by helping
to manage the activities of the employees and visitors to the
island.
Instructor.
Spring semester, 2002. The University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.
I was the instructor of record for Comparative Vertebrate Morphology.
In addition to my lecture duties, I handled the logistical operations
of the Comparative Vertebrate Morphology Laboratory and managed
one teaching assistant.
Physiology Laboratory Coordinator.1996-2001. The University
of Arkansas, Fayetteville. In conjunction with S.J. Beaupre, I
developed the teaching curriculum for the Comparative Physiology
Laboratories. I handled the logistical operations of both the
Comparative Physiology and the Human Physiology Laboratories and
managed up to seven other teaching assistants per semester.
Graduate Teaching Assistant. 1996-2001. The University
of Arkansas, Layetteville. Comparative Physiology Laboratory (6
semesters); Human Physiology Laboratory (6 semesters).
Research Assistant. 1997-2002. The University of Arkansas,
Fayetteville. Conducted laboratory research of metabolism and
energetic allocations in timber rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus)
for NSF-funded projects (to S.J. Beaupre).
Graduate Teaching Assistant. 1993-1996. The University
of Mississippi, Oxford. Major's (5 semesters) and Non-major's
(1 semester) Introductory Biology Laboratories; Ecology Laboratory
(1 semester); Biology of the Reptilia Laboratory (1 semester);
Biology of the Amphibia Laboratory (1 semester).
Instructor. 1994 and 1995. NSF Young Scholars Program,
The University of Mississippi, Oxford (summers); Field ecology
and herpetology instructor.

Research
Interests
My research focuses on understanding the environment-physiology
interaction that shapes the distribution of organisms. How an
organism allocates time and energy under varying environmental
conditions is a central theme in my research. I am particularly
interested in the mechanisms that establish geographic range
limits under sub lethal conditions, geographic variation in
physiological traits, brumation/hibernation ecology, and how
current allocation strategies may be used to predict future
responses as global climate changes. My interests also include
the proximate and ultimate mechanisms that may influence semelparity
and iteroparity in related species. |
