Linda Lopez (2006) is enrolled as a medical student at University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Texas. Happy to have successfully finished her first year.

Javier Garza (2006) has been admitted as a Ph.D. candidate in the Faculty of Medicine at LSU. He plans to conduct research in parasitology.

Martin Gonzalez (2005) graduate in respiratory therapy at UTMB in August 2007. Now working at Rennainsance Doctors Hospital and at Mission Regional Medical Center in Edinburg and Mission, respectively.

Deneb de Luna (2005) is currently enrolled as a graduate student of cell and molecular biology at the University of Rhode Island. She is planning to take a career in medicine at American University of Antigua.

Amanda Willford (2005) currently enrolled in Veterinary Medicine at Texas A& M University in College Statio. Plans to graduate in 2009 and will specialize in orthopedic surgery.

Elizabet Willford (2005) has completed her 3rd year of medicine at UTMB in Galveston, TX. She is planning to specialize in geriatrics and return to the Rio Grande Valley.

Noel C. Sánchez (2004) is currently a student at the UTMB in Galveston, TX.

De La Garza, Ariana (2004), Physician Assistant, currently working as a Tutor at Veterans Memorial High School (Mission, TX). She plans to continue her education into Public Health Administration.

Laura Rubinos (2004) is currently at Stanford University School of Medicine under a 1 year fellowship to work on cardiovascular research. Upon completion of this present fellowship, she will return to Baylor College of Medicine (Houston) to complete her medical studies.

Joseph Archer (2003) studying medicine in Universidad del Valle de Mexico in Reynosa. Plans to graduate in 2012.

Edith Reyes (now Peña) (2003) graduate in dentistry in May 2008 in San Antonio. She will open her office in San Antonio.

Janis DeLuna (2002) plans to study medicine at UT-Health and Science Center. At present, Janis is working in Telemundo/Fox TV news.

Rafael Carrales (2002) is teaching in Mission Veterans High School. He plans to take a masters in microbiology in the near future.

Elizabeth Gutiérrez (now Cavazos) (2002) has successfully finished her Master of Public Health degree this summer- She presently holds a position as a Coordinator for the Hidalgo/Starr County MedEd Program UTHSCSA - South Texas Programs.

Carla Perez (2001) currently finishing her career in Law at the University of Seattle. Carla is specializing in immigration law and plans to finish in August 2008. Married to Aravind Ramakrishnan, oncologist and stem cell researcher. Both live in Seattle (WA).

Celia Saldaña (2001) has been teaching secondary science at Mission High School. Now, pursuing a career in the pharmaceutical industry.

Cecilia Sánchez (2001) studying medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine, soon she will start continue a specialization in ophtalmology.

Brian Jameson (2001) graduated with honors in Dietetics. He has been working as a clinical dietitian in the last five years. Plans to continue studying medicine.

Veronica Romero (2001) teaches science at Anne Richard High School in La Joya, Texas. Graduate student at this department.

Erica (Ruiz) Espinoza (2001) medical student at UTMB, Galveston, Texas. After her graduation, Erica has been recently accepted in a family medicine residency program at Baylor College of Medicine/Kelsey-Seybold Clinic in Houston, Texas.

Xavier Garcia-Rojas (2000) will graduate in medicine in May 2005 at the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX. Xavier has been funded by a grant from the Howard Huges Medical Institute for Research in Human Medical Genetics. He plans to specialize in radiology.

Anthony M. Martínez (2000) graduated in medicine in 2004 at the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston. He is currently in Emergency Medicine at the University of Texas Houston Medical/Hermann Hospital.

Omar Daniel Rodríguez (2000) after several stints in medical studies and laboratory research, discovered his true passion for food and is getting ready to embark on further studies a the Culinary Institute of America in upstate New York starting Fall 2004.

Jesús Alejandro Rodríguez (2000) got involved in biomedical research at the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio for one year before enrolling into the Medical School there in 2001. He is currently on track to receive his MD in 2005 and plans his residence in Family Medicine.

Jeffrey M. Pierce (2000) graduated in medicine in 2004 at the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston. He is currently a resident in Family Medicine at the University of California-Santa Rosa in Northern California.

Azeneth Barrera (1997) obtained her Ph.D. at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio in 2005. Recently working on herpesviruses and hepatitis B virus at the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research and at the Children's Cancer Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas.

Jeff Rupert (1997) obtained his MS in Biology from UTPA. He has worked for Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge (LRGVNWR), Alamo, Texas, since then. He is currently refuge manager for LRGVNWR.

Charles Castillo (1997) received a BS in Biology in 1995 and a MS in Biology in 1997 from UTPA. Worked as a General Biology and Anatomy & Physiology instructor at South Texas Community College, now South Texas College, for two years. Charles currently works at Texas State Technical College in Harlingen, Texas, teaching General Biology (Botany & Zoology) and Anatomy & Physiology.

Corinna Rupert (1997) obtained his MS in Biology at UTPA. Corinna teaches biology at
South Texas College, McAllen, Texas.


Chris Gamel (1997). Master's degree from UTPA in 1997. PhD from TAMU-Galveston's cooperative program. He teaches Biology and Nature Photography at the Salt Lake Community College; Zoology and Ecology at Weber State University; and Advanced Nature Photography courses at the University of Utah's Continuing Education Program. He is the Chair of the Education Committee for the North American Nature Photography Association, and a monthly columnist for Photo Migrations Magazine.

Melissa Ochoa-Perez (1997) graduated as a doctor of medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine in May, 2003. She will continue with her education and will specialize in psychiatry.

Michael Alan Gorena (1997) graduated as a doctor of medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine in May, 2003. He plans to study internal medicine.

Dalia Giovanna Galicia (1997) graduated as a doctor of medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine in May, 2003. She will specialize in internal medicine.

Angela Elizabeth Partida (1997) graduated as a doctor of medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine in May, 2003. She will specialize in psychiatry.

Roberto (Bob) Gorena (1996) obtained his MS from UTPA/Biology Department under the direction of Dr. Tim Brush. Bobb obtained his Ph.D. in entomology from Texas A&M University and is now an entomologist of the Texas Department of Health, working on mosquito control. Lyssa Neida Ochoa (1996) graduated as a doctor of medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in May, 2003. She will continue to specialize in general surgery.

María E. Lozano-Gorena (1996) graduated as a doctor of medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in May, 2003. She plans to be an anesthesiologist.

Angelica Cisneros (1996) been working as a biology teacher at PSJA Memorial High School in Alamo (Texas). She has enrolled in graduate studies after 10 years of academic practice. Still single and she sings and play in a salsa band.

Roberto Chavana is a prestigious chiropractor in Edinburg.

Juan Mata (1979) obtained a degree in physical therapy at the University of Texas, Southwestern campus in Dallas. He currently practices at the Mata Physical Therapy in McAllen.

Carlos Rodriguez (1979) obtained a degree in physical therapy at the University of Texas, Southwestern campus in Dallas. He works as a physical therapist in Harlingen, Texas.

Antonio de la Peña (1966), former assistant professor who was associated with our department since his graduation. Retired in December 2005. Enjoys golf.
