Release: Monday, March 10, 2003 BRONCS HOST SAM HOUSTON STATE EDINBURG, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American's baseball team will begin a busy week with a two-game series against Sam Houston State at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The Broncs and Bearkats will play Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. and Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The Broncs bring a 9-11 record into the games against SHSU after dropping three games at Texas A&M last weekend. Sam Houston State is 7-9 after winning two of three games against Dallas Baptist at home last weekend. "It feels good to be back home, it's always nice to play at your own field," said UTPA Head Coach Willie Gawlik. "We played pretty well in the last two games at A&M, but the big difference was their pitching. (Freshman righthander) Aaron Guerra (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg HS) came in and closed out the third inning Sunday, and then pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings. He threw strikes, and hit his spots. SHSU is 0-6 against Texas and Texas A&M, but 7-3 against the rest of the teams they've played. "They played Texas pretty tough," said Gawlik. "They'll have a good team, and we'll have to play well to win." Freshman left fielder Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North HS) will take a 12-game hitting streak into Tuesday night's game. Alamia has hit in 13 of the 15 games he has played for the Broncs this season. A pair of lefthanders will probably start for Texas-Pan American. Sophomore Ricky Anderson (Corinth, TX/Lake Dallas HS/North Central Texas CC) and freshman Jason Duhon (Maurice, LA/Abbeville HS/Grayson County College) are scheduled to start. The Bearkats are expected to counter with senior righthanders Nathan Boyd and Jordan Tata. BA-39-03031003 |
