EDINBURG – The University of Texas Pan American men’s and women’s cross country teams hosted the UT-Pan American Invitational Saturday morning at the Ebony Hills Golf Course.

The men’s squad had four of the top five runners overall and defeated ITESM-Monterrey 22-35.  Heleodoro Navarro of Monterrey took individual honors with a time of 33:14 for the 10 kilometer course.  Eddie Aguilar led a string of UTPA runners that followed with a time of 33:49 for second place.  His brother Julio was third in 34:15, Israel Arroyo was fourth in 34:23 and Danny Salazar was fifth in 35:05.  Carlos Gallegos took eighth for the Broncs in 35:35.

Esmer Davila led the way for the women, winning the five kilometer race in 19:20.  She was closely followed by Blanca Reyes, who took second in 19:35.  Perla Rios was third in 19:46, Sandra Guerrero was fourth in 19:51 and Olaya Teran was fifth in 20:27.  Karina Fuerte was the top Monterrey runner in 21:00.  For the Lady Broncs Jessica Garcia was 11th in 23:03 and Susana Perez was 13th in 24:45.

“This was a very successful meet for us,” said UTPA Head Coach Dana Colligan-Guttierrez.  “We really appreciate the help of the City of Edinburg and Edinburg North High School.  It was great to run at home.  It really made it a more relaxed environment for the runners.  Eddie Aguilar had an outstanding race for the men.  All the women ran really well, but Sandy Guerrero stood out with a personal record time.”

According to ITESM Monterrey Coach Francisco Olivares it was the first time Monterrey had ever run in a cross country meet.  Both Bronc squads will run next at the NCAA South Central Regional in Denton, Texas, on November 13.
