The
Journal of Black Issues in Higher Education has recently honored three
student-athletes at The University of Texas-Pan American as 2001
recipients of the prestigious Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholar award.
Woman’s golfer, Adriana Espinoza, and Baseball player, Oziel
Ortiz was both honored for the second consecutive year.
First year Cross Country and Track standout, Patty Villarreal was
honored for the first time.
This
prestigious award is bestowed annually to select minority
student-athletes throughout the United States as a means of publicly
acknowledging their academic and athletic achievements.
The work that these individuals perform in and out of the
athletic arena is a tribute to the legacy of Arthur Ashe Jr.
“This is not only an honor for the student-athletes but for The
University of Texas-Pan American as testament to the quality individuals
who excel in our system” said Athletic Academic Coordinator, Chris
Uchacz. Adriana Espinoza is a junior on the women’s golf team who is majoring in art. In addition to the bestowment of this honor she has also been a member of the Bronc Pride 3.0 Club, the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and a recipient of the Anheuser Busch-La Mantia Endowment Scholarship. Oziel Ortiz
completed his junior season on the Bronc baseball team while graduating
earlier this month with a degree in Biology.
Ortiz was also a member of the Bronc Pride 3.0 Club and the
Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. Villarreal,
a newcomer to Lady Bronc athletics, is also a biology major that has
recently been named to the Bronc Pride 3.0 Club and the Athletic
Director’s Honor Roll.
