The search for extraterrestrial life or the next "E.T." was the focus of just one presentation during the College of Science and Mathematics Symposium held at The University of Texas-Pan American Sept. 24-27 during the recent 2012 Hispanic Engineering, Science and Technology (HESTEC) conference.

Knocking all the required blocks off an obstacle course with more than a minute to spare with its robot "Nano Doctor," the Veterans Middle School team from Rio Grande City secured its place as champion of the 2012 Robotics Day at The University of Texas-Pan American Hispanic Engineering, Science and Technology (HESTEC) conference.

South Texas mothers and their daughters mustered up the imagination and resourcefulness that engineers need when they joined forces to assemble a marshmallow tower during a day committed to promoting science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers to women.

About 400 teachers from middle schools throughout South Texas were encouraged to ignite interest in science and math in their students during The University of Texas-Pan American's Hispanic Engineering, Science and Technology (HESTEC) week during Educator Day Monday, Sept. 24. 2012

When panel moderator Ida Acuña Garza, executive director of the South Texas Literacy Coalition, asked the audience at Librarians and Educators Day March 22 at the 2013 Festival of International Books and Arts (FESTIBA) how many knew someone with diabetes, all the hands in the room flew up.

Community Day featured performances by award-winning country music star Clay Walker and local musical acts, as well as appearances by entertainer Mario Lopez, former NASA astronaut Jose Hernandez and the Science Cheerleaders.

Bill Nye, the Science Guy was a keynote speaker at HESTEC's Educator Day. Nye, who is executive director of the Planetary Society, urged teachers to inspire their students to pursue STEM fields so they can solve the world's problems.

Fifty teams of middle school students from all over the Rio Grande Valley had to navigate the Parrot AR. Drone quadricopter during the HESTEC Robotics Day competition sponsored by Raytheon Thursday, Sept. 29.

Mullapudi is the coordinator for the Data and Information System Center. He has been married eight years and is a proud father of his 18 month old daughter. He graduated in 1996 from Andhra University in his home country of India, where he received a bachelor’s and master’s degree in business administration. Mullapudi later journeyed to The University of Texas-Pan American, where he completed a second master’s degree in information technology.

Ismael Delgado, Director for Special Projects with the Hispanic Serving Institutions Assisting Community (HSIAC) grant, a project funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUS), undertakes a huge responsibility in his career.


Hundreds of Rio Grande Valley children and their families walked away from the sixth annual FESTIBA (Festival of International Books and Arts) Community Day at The University of Texas-Pan American April 2 with memories of a day filled with fun, food, art and entertainment.

The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at The University of Texas-Pan American has earned the U.S. Small Business Administration's Service Excellence and Innovation Award for 2011. The UTPA SBDC was chosen from approximately 1,100 locations across the nation that were eligible for consideration.

Nearly 200 students at Brown Middle School received not only a free author-signed book but a high five from red-shirt-wearing Target employees as they exited the school's cafeteria March 31.

About 1,000 high school students in GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) came to The University of Texas-Pan American Thursday, March 31 and Friday, April 1 during GEAR UP DAYS at FESTIBA (Festival of International Books and Arts) Week 2011, where they watched plays and heard authors talk about the power of writing.

“Can you imagine how many books we’ve shared and lives we’ve changed?” said Dahlia Guerra, UTPA’s chief organizer for FESTIBA 2011 and dean of the college of arts and humanities.

“For children to succeed, to succeed in life, to succeed in anything they need to read and the younger they are when they begin reading, the more successful they are going to be later on in their lives. Reading at an early age will make certain that they will get through high school, graduate and go on to college,” he said. “We need a reading public in the Valley.”

The two young women leafed through many books before they stopped and found something completely unexpected: a book that included a story about one of their great-great grandfathers! The two showed off the book to everyone in line as they waited to pay at last year’s UTPA Alumni Used Book Sale held last year during FESTIBA 2010. There may well be more gems to find at this year’s sale, slated for Saturday, April 2, during FESTIBA 2011 on the UTPA campus.

FESTIBA promotes literacy and reading along with celebrating the arts and humanities within South Texas. The event provides UTPA and its surrounding communities the opportunity to engage through art exhibits such as "Selected Works on Paper" by Chicano artist, Yreina D. Cervantez, keynote speakers like Matthew Gollub, award-winning children's author and storyteller, and the five-day "Border Heroes" Academic Conference that will feature a select few men and women who have made a major impact on bridging cultural understanding between differing countries and their people.

Twenty-two middle school teams and 16 high school teams of students from the Rio Grande Valley came together Feb. 26 at The University of Texas-Pan American to test brains rather than brawn at the Regional Science Bowl 2011.


Administrators from The University of Texas-Pan American, along with its partners in government, pre K-12 education, business, and the community, came together Feb. 24 to announce this year’s schedule for FESTIBA (Festival of International Books and Arts), an annual University celebration of arts and humanities that seeks to improve the Valley's literacy rate by increasing the interest in reading and improving student success in secondary and postsecondary education.


U.S. Rep. Rubén Hinojosa, TX-15, addressed faculty and staff of The University of Texas-Pan American, as well as other members of the community, Jan. 12 about the recent shootings in Tucson, Ariz. That killed six people and critically injured U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, an Arizona congresswoman and colleague of Hinojosa, among several others.


Twenty-three nonprofit organizations in Hidalgo and Starr Counties will be able to better serve their clients, thanks to federal grants they were awarded Nov. 1 by The University of Texas-Pan American's Southwest Border Nonprofit Resource Center (SBNRC).

Astronaut Lee Morin has landed at The University of Texas-Pan American for Hispanic Engineering, Science and Technology (HESTEC) Week with the assignment of inspiring young students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

The University of Texas-Pan American's South Texas Initiative for Child Nutrition through Agriculture Project, funded by the Monsanto Fund, have promoted nutrition and health to Valley schools since 2008 and have formed new partnerships in order to reach more children like those in San Perlita Independent School District.

The atmosphere was suspenseful as two Rio Grande Valley student teams were tied with 25 seconds left in the final round of the first State Farm Financial Literacy High School Challenge held May 22 at The University of Texas-Pan American.
