High school juniors and seniors from Monte Alto and Edcouch Elsa proudly display their certificates of achievement after having completed their financial literacy course offered by the HSIAC program. Through this class, they learned how manage their money wisely and how to obtain a job.

Dr. Robert Ballard, American oceanographer and marine geologist who is best known for discovering the wreck of the Titanic in 1985, spoke to high school students regarding the importance of pursuing a career in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields during HESTEC 2009.

During FESTIBA Week, elementary students from throughout the valley visited the Follett Book Fair in which they had the opportunity to buy books and enjoy educational presentations and performances, such as the storytelling of the folktale puppet show "The Tongue Cut Sparrow" conducted by UTPA theater students.

Twenty-three nonprofit organizations in Hidalgo and Starr Counties received grants, ranging from $10,000 to $20,000, to increase their capacity building and address the needs of the Rio Grande Valley. FORGE will be a three-year project to assist the 16,000 Hispanic Farmers and ranchers--- in its 57 county Texas/New Mexico area--with USDA Programs available through the newly enacted 2008 Farm Bill. The goal of FORGE is to provide outreach, training, and technical assistance to encourage and assist Hispanic producers of traditional crops and livestock to own and operate farms and ranches and to participate in USDA agricultural programs made available through the recently enacted 2008 Farm Bill.

As part of the Initiative for Child Nutrition through Agriculture (ICNA), students from the South Texas School for Health Professions (shown above) prepare the plot for their first ever nutrition garden, a project geared towards helping them appreciate nutritional value and the importance of pursuing a continuous healthy lifestyle.

10th annual HESTEC Community Day draws thousands to UTPA

Community Day featured performances by award-winning country music star Clay Walker and local musical acts, as well as appearances by entertainer Mario Lopez, former NASA astronaut Jose Hernandez and the Science Cheerleaders.

Teachers learn how to inspire students on HESTEC Educator Day

Bill Nye, the Science Guy was a keynote speaker at HESTEC's Educator Day. Nye, who is executive director of the Planetary Society, urged teachers to inspire their students to pursue STEM fields so they can solve the world's problems.

HESTEC Robotics Competition

Fifty teams of middle school students from all over the Rio Grande Valley had to navigate the Parrot AR. Drone quadricopter during the HESTEC Robotics Day competition sponsored by Raytheon Thursday, Sept. 29.

Staff Star

Mullapudi is the coordinator for the Data and Information System Center. He has been married eight years and is a proud father of his 18 month old daughter. He graduated in 1996 from Andhra University in his home country of India, where he received a bachelor’s and master’s degree in business administration. Mullapudi later journeyed to The University of Texas-Pan American, where he completed a second master’s degree in information technology.
