Kappa Delta Pi Receives Achieving Chapter Excellence (ACE) Award

 Ace Award

The Kappa Delta Pi chapter at UTPA received its second consecutive Achieving Chapter Excellence (ACE) Award at the KDP national conference and centennial convocation November 4, 2011 at Indianapolis, Indiana. Kappa Delta Pi presents the award each biennium to those chapters that exhibit outstanding programming in support of the Society’s mission and strategic goals. Since its inception, chapters across the country and internationally have aspired to offer creative purposeful programming and a full slate of chapter activities with the hope of earning this coveted award. Only 24 out of 665 chapters were named ACE Award winners for 2009-2011. To be considered for the award, chapters must submit a portfolio that documents their work during the two-year period. The portfolios are assessed in six areas including:

  1. programming, membership, and retention,
  2. recognition,
  3. service ideals,
  4. practices, inquiry reflection-science, and fidelity to human ideals,
  5. professional development, and
  6. leadership development.

“To be recognized from the most prestigious honor society in Education with such a rich history at the centennial celebration of the organization, and for the second consecutive biennium, is simply awesome. The award truly belongs to our highly talented and committed Education students, alumni members, and faculty members who worked so hard to achieve this honor,” stated Dr. Veronica Lopez-Estrada, faculty Counselor of Lambda Psi chapter at UTPA. "On behalf of the chapter officers and members, I want to recognize our COE faculty members and administrators who nominate the best and the brightest of our students to join our honor society and who support us in our endeavors” stated Dr. Lopez-Estrada, who serves the international society as the Communication Committee Chair and as an editorial review board member of one of society’s journals, The Record.

UTPA’s chapter was also recognized with several other awards including the competitive Distinguished Chapter Award for Celine Valadez (Chapter President; one of 9 recipients),Counselor Service Award for Dr. Lopez-Estrada (15 Years of Service), Chapter Literacy Alive Project Award (Family Literacy Nights), Chapter Challenge Award, and Educational Foundation Award. Four members attended the conference and conducted presentations with Dr. Lopez-Estrada including Jose Bochas, Andres Ayala, Tammy Castillo, and Isaac Rojas. Members also attended presentations by renowned KDP Laureates including Gloria Ladson-Billings, Ann Lieberman, Marilyn Cochran-Smith, Sonia Nieto, the first Latina scholar to be inducted to the society, and the National Teacher of the Year (2011), Michelle Shearer.

UTPA’s Kappa Delta Pi chapter is the past recipient of the ACE of the ACE award in 2009, the chapter award that has the highest level of excellence based on ACE criteria.
