eClose-ups Home Dr. Janine Schall chaired a symposium titled “’Spanish Is Good but English Is Better’: The Cultural and Professional Development of Bilingual Teachers” at the National Reading Conference/Literacy Research Association Annual Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico, December 2009. As part of the symposium she presented a paper titled “I Hate the Word Hispanic: Navigating Cultural Identities in the Borderlands.”


Dr. Shall also presented a paper titled “Twenty Years Since Heather Has Two Mommies: Picture Books with LGBT Characters” at the National Council of Teachers of English Annual Convention in Philadelphia, PA., November 2009.

eClose-ups Home Dr. Alcione Ostorga and Dr. Veronica Estrada published an article in Action in Teacher Education:

eClose-ups Home Dr. Ostorga had a presentation at the National Reading Conference, Albuquerque, December 5th 2009, titled “Latino Children Are Separated and Tracked into Different Groups... Makes Them Feel Like Losers”: Developing a Professional Identity

eClose-ups Home Dr. Karen Watt published an article in American Secondary Education:

eClose-ups Home Dr. John Lowdermilk with Dr. Cheryl Fielding, Mrs. Julie Pecina, and Lisa Beccera (Graduate Student) presented an article PIECING TOGETHER THE FUTURE OF VIRTUAL TRAINING: SECOND LIFE AND TRAINING PROFESSIONALS TO WORK WITH CHILDREN WITH EMOTIONAL DISORDERS at the International Association for Development of the Information Society's international conference in Rome, Italy on Thursday, November 19, 2009. Additionally, Dr. Lowdermilk chaired one of the sessions that dealt with Internet security.

Dr. John Lowdermilk with Dr. Cheryl Fielding, Mrs. Julie Pecina, and Lisa Beccera (Graduate Student) also premiered their video ethnography Cruzando Fronteras on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at the Cinesol International Film Festival in McAllen, TX.
