Contributed oral presentations

Contributed oral presentations will be grouped into symposia by subject. The presenting author is asked to indicate on the registration form which topic their presentation fits the best. The Planning Committee will heed the wish of the author if possible and assign a session chair for each symposium.

Microsoft PowerPoint is the presentation standard for the meeting. Presentations may be given in Spanish, but the PowerPoint slides and the abstract must be in English. Speakers should bring their presentation stored on CD or USB drive only; other storage formats may not be supported. Presenters must download their files to the PC of their session at least 30 minutes before the start of their session.

Each presentation should be a maximum of 15 minutes long with an additional 5 minutes for questions. There will be additional time for discussion at the end of each symposium.

Poster presentations

The poster session provides an additional means of substantive discussion of papers for attendees. No competing activities will be scheduled during the poster session. Papers scheduled for presentation in the poster session are grouped by subject, numbered, and listed with their abstract in the Program & Abstracts booklet.

Each numbered poster will be allotted a correspondingly numbered space 3 feet tall × 4 feet wide (122 × 91 cm) [updated 13 December 2011]. Indicate the abstract number, title, and name(s) of the author(s) at the top of the poster so that it may be identified easily; the lettering for this heading should be at least 1 inch (72 points) high.

Please note: Posters can be in English or Spanish, but an abstract in English must be posted in the left-hand corner of your poster if it is in Spanish.

Who may present?

Professionals (with M.Sc. or Ph.D.) and graduate students are invited to present an oral presentation and/or a poster presentation. Separate abstracts should be submitted for each presentation (see below).

Submission guidelines

Preparing your abstract(s)

All abstracts must be submitted in English. When writing your abstract, both the title and the content are important components.

The title should be short, concise, and indicative of the abstract; omit “the” wherever possible. Avoid general words like “Studies on” or “Investigations of.” List all authors names followed by their affiliation and contact details. Indicate the presenting author of the paper or poster, by an asterisk (*) on the abstract.

The content should be a single paragraph of no more than 2,100 characters (including spaces, punctuation and HTML codes introduced by the abstract submission program) containing a concise statement of:

  1. The problem under investigation;
  2. The experimental methods used, and;
  3. The essential results obtained.

The text should cite quantitative data from representative experiments or summary data. Scientific names should be written in full when first used, but on repetition abbreviate the genus name with the first letter of the genus only. Italicize all scientific names.

Submitting your abstract(s)

All abstracts must be submitted via e-mail to blfredenbor@utpa.edu by the submission deadline of 15 November 2011. You will receive confirmation that the abstract was received within 24 hours of submission.
