Dear UTPA Faculty and Staff Members,
It is my pleasure to invite you to become a part of the Office for Student Involvement’s Mentoring Program for First Year Students (1YM). The program’s purpose is to assist first year students to make a more successful transition into university life.
Through student and faculty/staff mentoring, the program strives to push self-discovery, become life-long learners and enrich the student’s college experience.
Each protégé will be paired up with a student mentor. The role of the student mentor is to provide guidance and assistance to the protégés in order for them to become comfortable with UTPA and embrace the Bronc Community. This includes introducing the protégés to student organizations, programs, events and other social aspects of UTPA. In addition, the student mentors will motivate the protégés to succeed academically and push them to do their best.
The other aspect of this program is that each protégé will also be paired up with a faculty or staff mentor. The role of the faculty/staff mentor will be to act as a role model for the protégé, to provide advice and information. This separate and more experienced perspective given by the faculty/staff mentor will prepare and shape the protégé for the future. This is where our UTPA faculty and staff members come in. The time commitment is meeting with your assigned protégé twice a month and this is based on your schedule and your protégés schedule.
