Dr. Rhodes, a Lecturer in Geology at UTPA, says the resources we value most do not fill our basic needs or enhance our well-being, but rather fulfill desire and bring about untold harm. She uses gold and diamonds (BLING) as examples of natural resources exploited for perceived status to show how market demand negatively affects Earth, human lives, and the human psyche.
