Graduate Student Association Resume/Vitae Workshop

Greetings Graduates!

As foretold, we have finalized our workshop event, to be held this Saturday, Nov. 14th from 1pm to 2pm in the 3rd Floor Board Room of the ADMIN Building (where the Graduate Office is located).

We have an exciting line up of guest specialists who will come to personally look over and tutor people's resumes and CVs. Among these individuals are the University Writing Center Interim Director - Terrie Garcia and our own Graduate Adviser - Denisse Cantu. We will also have representatives from Career Services to participate and distribute handouts.

The event will begin with a short presentation by your officers to brief on the different job sectors to apply for (business/academic/non-profit/government). Our goal is to provide a list of resources representing these job markets and example resumes for participants to begin exploring job possibilities on their own - in the event some participants cannot stay for the entire event. After which, each guest specialist will spend a few minutes introducing themselves and their field of expertise. Each specialist will then be available in separate work areas to tutor your documents and answer questions.

Please spread the word this week to anyone you think may be interested. Though this workshop is geared towards graduate student concerns, undergrads are more than welcome to attend and you are not obligated to bring a CV or a resume to participate.

President Bill Clinton speaks at UTPA

Long winding lines marked the wait for President Bill Clinton at The University of Texas-Pan American on Oct. 22. He spoke at the Fine Arts Auditorium about pressing issues facing the world and how his Clinton Global Initiative is set to help.

More than 1,000 people from UTPA and the community witnessed his visit and listened to Clinton encourage change for a better world through education, community service and sustainability efforts.

“I am delighted to be here at UTPA and there is nothing I would rather do than be here tonight and have the opportunity to speak to all of you, particularly those who are students,” Clinton said. “I like to come to colleges and universities to ask young people to think clearly, have a clear view of the world and its challenges so you can learn what you can do.” Read more

Distinguished Speakers Series: Steve Wozniak - Oct. 20, 09

For the sixth consecutive year, the Distinguished Speakers Series will offer not only students but faculty, staff and Rio Grande Valley residents the chance to hear and learn from some of the world’s most intriguing, impactful and inspiring personalities. The 2009-2010 series first speaker will be Steve Wozniak, a Silicon Valley icon, who helped shape the computer industry with his design of Apple’s first line of products – the Apple I and II – and his influence on the Macintosh. He was recognized as one of America’s leading innovators with the National Medal of Technology and has been inducted into the Inventors Hall of Fame. His presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the UTPA Fine Arts Auditorium. Seating for students, staff and faculty with appropriate UTPA ID will commence at 7 p.m.; seating for the public will begin at 7:20 p.m.

Carnival of the Great Pumpkin - Oct. 31st. 09

Bring the kids and enjoy a safe and fun Halloween celebration at UTPA’s Carnival of the Great Pumpkin on Oct. 31. The annual event will be held from 6-10 p.m. in the UTPA Fieldhouse. Student organizations on campus will offer food booths and carnival games with 100 percent of the proceeds going to help operate their organizations. Families can also enjoy music, costume contests with prizes, a pumpkin pie eating contest and free attractions like an inflatable moon jump. Admission is free. Former President Bill Clinton to speak at UTPA - Oct. 22nd, 09

Don’t miss a chance to see the 42nd President of the United States – Bill Clinton – when he speaks on campus Oct. 22. Clinton will speak about the initiatives of the William J. Clinton Foundation to help solve some of the world’s most challenging problems. Hear how you can make a positive impact on the world. Clinton will begin his presentation at 6:45 p.m. in the UTPA Fine Arts Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 6 p.m. but priority seating will go to you – students, faculty and staff –with appropriate UTPA ID. For security reasons, attendees are discouraged from bringing backpacks, briefcases, purses, camera bags or other similar items to the presentation. UT Arlington offers competition for all Texas graduate students

ARLINGTON - The Academy of Distinguished Scholars (ADS) at The University of Texas at Arlington is sponsoring a new award competition for students currently enrolled and in good standing in any graduate program in a Texas institution of higher education. Eligible students are invited to submit a short (800-word) preliminary proposal describing how current knowledge could be applied to improve the lives of citizens of Texas.

The winner of the UT Arlington ADS Public Interest Award will receive a cash prize of $5,000. Applicants whose proposals are designated honorable mentions will receive a cash prize of $2,500. To determine eligibility and to learn how to prepare and submit a proposal, graduate students should visit the UT Arlington ADS Web site, http://www.uta.edu/ads. Proposals for the 2009-10 competition can be submitted online Oct. 1 through Nov. 15.
