Talk: questions in real estate and finance

“There is no question that the study of real estate is worthwhile since it is essential in obtaining the standard of living most of us desire,” said Dr. Changa Jin, on of CoBA’s newest professors, who brings with him a world of knowledge about finance and real estate.

With a bachelor’s degree in international business from Konkuk University in Seoul, Korea and a Ph.D in business administration from Georgia State University, Jin is the professor to go to when it comes to seeing real estate as a global institution but acting on it locally.

Admittedly, this wasn’t the first question asked when we began our conversation. Instead I wondered, “why major in real estate economics and finances?”

When asked, Jin easily replied, “It is one of the great areas to study for general business background because real estate problems and cases require the integrations of various academic disciplines. It is an area of importance, especially for most of our students whose future wealth will be tied up in real estate.”

Thus it became a question of monetary relevance, especially since the economies of the world are so intertwined. However, one question begets another and soon enough one is left wondering how best to ask the question before answering it. It only makes sense that Jin and I continue exploring them in future columns.

Mora Invited to Speak at the Department of Labor and at UC Berkeley

Labor Secretary, Hilda Solis, was one of the participants in the audience that heard Dr. Marie T. Mora, CoBA professor of economics, speak recently.  As a recognized expert in Hispanic Labor economics and president of the American Society of Hispanic Economists (ASHE), Mora was invited to speak to the Department of Labor about Hispanic employment conditions.  The event was co-hosted by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Policy and the Employment and Training Administration.

Not only was Solis present at the October 20 event, she actively participated in the discussions, according to Mora.  Being a presenter at the event in Washington, D. C. and meeting Secretary Solis was a great experience, said Mora, who was deeply honored to be invited to participate.

News about the event was posted in the October 22 Department of Labor News Brief, in a story titled “Prominent Latina Labor Economists Discuss ‘Good Jobs for Everyone’”.  The story notes that through the discussions with Mora and others “participants learned more about how the
Department's agencies can benchmark and develop strategies to ensure that everyone has access to jobs that can provide economic security. These discussions provide DOL employees with an important introduction to diverse resources and tools to achieve Secretary Solis' vision — Good Jobs for Everyone!”

Mora was also invited to make a presentation at the Integrated Graduate Education Research and Training Program in the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley on October 14.  Her presentation was based on a paper “English-Language Proficiency and Occupational Risk among Hispanic Men in the U.S.”  coauthored with CoBA economics professor and department chair Dr. Alberto Dávila and recent PhD-graduate Rebecca González.

Dávila Educates Educators on Economics

Teaching teachers about personal financial management so they may better instruct their public school students was the topic of an all-day workshop conducted by Dr. Alberto Dávila. About 25 high school teachers from Laredo to Brownsville participated in the event held at Region 1.

“The teachers were very receptive to the information generated by the Texas Council on Economic Education for the economic education of their students,” said Davila. Special topics included Education Pays Off: Learn Something and Spending and Credit Are Serious Business.
