LADY BRONCS DROP TWO

LAS CRUCES, NM-The University of Texas-Pan American’s volleyball team dropped both of their matches at the BorderLand Battle Saturday.

The Lady Broncs lost to New Mexico State, 30-20, 30-17 and 30-16, Saturday night at the Pan American Center on the NMSU campus. Saturday afternoon, Texas-Pan American lost to New Mexico, 30-22, 30-26, and 30-23 at Memorial Gym on the Texas-El Paso campus.

New Mexico State got 14 kills from Trinia Cuseo, 11 from Michelle Mosbacher and 10 from Sarah Silagy in Saturday night’s match.  Junior outside hitter Jaclyn Muszynski (Walnut, CA/Walnut HS) had 11 kills and seven digs for the Lady Broncs. Junior outside hitter Cathi Netemeyer (Los Fresnos, TX/Los Fresnos HS/Iowa) added 12 digs, senior outside hitter Jessica Lawson (West Covina, CA/South Hills HS) had eight digs, while freshman setter Katie Burke (Georgetown, TX/Georgetown HS) had 19 assists.

Netemeyer had nine kills and a .263 hitting percentage against the Lobos, while Muszynski added nine kills and 15 digs. Anna Reines led UNM with 16 kills and a .419 hitting percentage, Vanessa Sheilds and Cayse Kaveny added 12 kills apiece, Staci Masten had 11, and Monica Meihack had 45 assists.

“We ran into a good team, and we didn’t make the plays we needed to, and that’s a bad combination,” said UTPA Head Coach Dave Thorn. “The effort is there, but we didn’t convert the opportunities that we had, and that’s something we need to improve on. We had trouble slowing down Trinia Cuseo. Against New Mexico, we weren’t able to stop their big hitter (Reines), and, overall, we didn’t play that well defensively.”

The Lady Broncs fell to 1-9 with the losses. UTPA will return home to play Texas A&M-Kingsville Tuesday night.
