LADY BRONCS EARN FIRST WIN

EDINBURG, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American’s volleyball team made their first home match of the 2002 season a successful one.

The Lady Broncs hit a near-record .422 and defeated Texas Southern, 30-16, 30-24 and 30-9 at the UTPA Fieldhouse Tuesday evening. The percentage was 56 points short of the school-record .478 the Lady Broncs hit against Texas Southern two years ago, and marked only the second time Texas-Pan American had hit over .400 in a match in which they had 25 kills or more.

Junior outside hitter Winker Cruz (Harlingen, TX/Harlingen South HS) had 10 kills and six digs, junior outside hitter Cathi Netemeyer (Los Fresnos, TX/Los Fresnos HS/Iowa) added nine kills and a .444 hitting percentage, junior outside hitter Jaclyn Muszynski (Walnut, CA/Walnut HS) had eight kills and hit .727, freshman middle blocker Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin HS) hit .778 with seven kills, and freshman setter Katie Burke (Georgetown, TX/Georgetown HS) had 34 assists.

“It was certainly good to play well and get our first victory of the season on our home court,” said UTPA Head Coach Dave Thorn. “We were very aggressive, particularly in games one and three. I was very glad to see that we only had nine hitting errors. We have been stressing that in practice, and it was good to see us execute as well as we did. That was Katie Burke’s best game, assist-wise, by far.”

LaQuana Morgan had eight kills for the Lady Tigers, and Orlena Evans added seven.

The Lady Broncs improved to 1-6 with the victory, while Texas Southern dropped to 0-7. UT Pan American will visit New Mexico State and Texas-El Paso this weekend, and will return home to play Texas A&M-Kingsville a week from tonight.
