LADY BRONCS FALL TO XU, FIU

CINCINNATI, OH-Once again, the University of Texas-Pan American volleyball team made it close in their final two matches at the Xavier Invitational at XU’s Cintas Center Saturday.

The Lady Broncs dropped their final two matches in the tournament, losing to Florida International, 30-28, 30-26 and 30-15 after dropping a 30-25, 30-17 and 30-16 decision to the host Musketeers.

Junior outside hitter Jaclyn Muszynski (Walnut, CA/Walnut HS) had 10 kills and seven digs against XU, and 11 kills and seven digs against the Golden Panthers. Junior outside hitter Winker Cruz (Harlingen, TX/Harlingen South HS) had 11 digs against Xavier, and added seven kills and 11 digs against Florida International.

“Our team played hard, and was aggressive,” said UTPA Head Coach Dave Thorn. “We lost a close one to Xavier in the first game, and we were right there in the second match as well. Jaclyn and Winker played well. FIU had a player with a good jump serve, and, because of that, they were able to make several runs on us. I think we’re improving, and we’re looking forward to playing at home on Tuesday.”

Musketeer setter Molly Martin had 10 kills in 11 attempts for a .909 hitting percentage, and also added 37 assists, while Meggie Hoffman added 13 kills and 10 digs.

The Lady Broncs fell to 0-6 with the defeats. Xavier improved to 1-4, while FIU improved to 3-3. Texas-Pan American will open their home season Tuesday night when they host Texas Southern at 7:00 p.m. at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
