Immediate Release: Saturday, August 31, 2002 LADY BRONCS FALL TO VIRGINIA AUSTIN, TX-Celeste Laborde and Paige Davis had 12 kills each to lead Virginia past The University of Texas-Pan American, 30-18, 30-11 and 30-17 in each team’s third and final match at the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational at Gregory Gym on the University of Texas campus Saturday afternoon. Laborde hit .600 on 12 kills in 20 attempts for the Cavaliers. Junior Winker Cruz (Harlingen, TX/Harlingen South HS) led the Lady Broncs with seven kills and a .278 hitting percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Cathi Netemeyer (Los Fresnos, CA/Los Fresnos HS/Iowa) added six kills and ten digs for Texas-Pan American. However, Netemeyer left the match in the second game after spraining her ankle. Junior Jena Rae Rosales (McAllen, TX/McAllen HS) added 10 digs for UTPA. “Virginia’s a good team, and we probably didn’t play as well as we could have,” said UTPA Head Coach Dave Thorn. “Winker had a good match. Unfortunately, Cathi was injured, but, hopefully, it won’t be serious.” The Lady Broncs dropped to 0-3, while Virginia improved to 1-2. UT Pan American will return to action when they visit the Xavier Invitational next weekend. VB-04-03 083102 |
