BRONCS ADVANCE TWO AT BAYLOR

WACO, TX-Two members of The University of Texas-Pan American men's tennis team are still in contention as the consolation round of the HEB Baylor Intercollegiate Tournament at the Baylor Tennis Center enters its final day Sunday.

Saturday, sophomore Filip Koziell (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll HS) defeated Carlo Contente of Wichita State, 6-1, 6-4. He was supposed to play Texas' number one player, Jean Simon, but Simon was ill and was forced to withdraw. Freshman Oliver Steil (Brunssum, The Netherlands/AF North International School) defeated Juan Pablo Alatorre of Lamar, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Both Steil and Koziell will play in the consolation quarterfinals.

Sophomore Jeremy Salvo (Coquitlam, British Columbia/Centennial Secondary) lost to Eduardo Pacheco of Arkansas, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, while senior Neil Barraclough (Coventry, England/Cardinal Newman HS/Seward County Community College) lost to Alon Goldshuv of Texas-Arlington, 6-1, 6-3.

The Broncs didn't fare quite as well in doubles. Salvo and Koziell lost to Benedi Dorsch and Mattias Marin of Baylor, 8-3, while Barraclough and Steil lost to Marc Castellana and Ivan Kovalev of Louisiana-Lafayette, 8-4. There is no consolation round in doubles.

"We played pretty well in singles," said UTPA Head Coach Todd Chapman. "Filip played pretty well, and Jeremy played a great match. He lost the first set, got it together and played two great sets, and just came up short. Oliver also lost the first set, then came back and played hard. I was proud of Neil. He had a stomach virus, fought hard, and it was just too hard to overcome. We didn't play that well in doubles, and we have some things to work on, but I was happy with our singles."

The Broncs will return to action October 18th at the Texas-San Antonio Invitational.
