For Immediate Release: Thursday, February 27, 2003 BRONCS FINISH SEASON AT MORRIS BROWN EDINBURG, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball team will try to finished their 2002-2003 season with a victory when they visit Morris Brown Saturday evening. The Broncs will take a 10-19 record into the game, which will mark the first meeting ever between the two teams. Four seniors-guards Kevin Mitchell (Copperas Cove, TX/Copperas Cove HS/McLennan CC), James Davis (Oklahoma City, OK/Casady HS/Westark CC), and Gabe Cortez (Mercedes, TX/Mercedes HS) and forward Tomas Sitnikovas (Panevezys, Lithuania/Panevezys HS#5/Mid-Plains CC) will play their final games in a Texas-Pan American uniform Saturday evening. Mitchell, who was recently named to the Verizon Academic All-District VI team, could move up in a few categories this weekend. He is 25 minutes behind Mike Carroll's UTPA record of 1057 minutes played, during the 1980-81 season. He also ranks fourth on the all-time single season list with 74 three-point field goals and 213 three-point field goal attempts. Both teams lost their previous games, Texas-Pan American losing their home finale to Centenary Monday night, and the Wolverines falling at Bethune-Cookman Wednesday evening. Morris Brown is 7-19 coming into Saturday's game, and forward Amien Hicks is tied for third in rebounding nationally, averaging 12.1 rebounds per game. Morris Brown has lost five games in a row since winning six of seven in January and early February. "They've won some games lately, and they played a lot of good teams close early," said Hoffman. "They beat Lipscomb at Lipscomb, and Lipscomb beat Centenary by 14. They have a couple of good scorer, and Hicks is a real good rebounder. They're a very athletic team. In order to win, we have to limit them as far as second shots are concerned. They can make a living off their second shots if you don't limit them." The game will conclude the Broncs' 2002-2003 season. MBB-52-03022703 |
