MITCHELL NAMED TO VERIZON ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT TEAM

EDINBURG, TX-Senior guard Kevin Mitchell (Copperas Cove, TX/Copperas Cove HS/McLennan CC) of The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball team has received a prestigious honor.

Mitchell is one of five players named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District Team, as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Five players are named in each of eight regions, and they become eligible for 2003 Verizon Academic All-American honors.

Mitchell leads the Broncs in scoring, averaging 14.2 points per game. He is first with 70 three-point field goals, makes 74.8 per cent of his free throws, and averages 3.3 assists per game.

A starter in every game except one during his two-year career at Texas-Pan American, Mitchell earned second team All-Independent honors last year while quarterbacking the Broncs' offense that ranked 24th nationally in scoring and 21st nationally in field goal percentage.

A fine student, Mitchell has a 3.571 grade point average while majoring in Marketing. At UTPA, he has been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll, earned Dean's List 2nd Honors, has been named to the Bronc Pride 3.0 Club in each of his three semesters at Texas-Pan American, and has been named a United States Achievement Academy All-American Scholar.

"The naming of Kevin Mitchell to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District Six Men's Basketball Team is a very prestigious honor for Kevin, our men's basketball program, our athletic department, and The University of Texas-Pan American," said UTPA Director of Athletics William J. Weidner. "We are most proud of Kevin's outstanding accomplishments as a student-athlete at The University of Texas-Pan American both on the court and in the classroom."

"It's a great reward for a tremendous young man who has done an amazing job of being able to combine being an athlete with, most important, being a student," said UTPA Head Coach Bob Hoffman. " It's a great honor for someone who's done things right."
