UTPA BRONC BASKETBALL CLINIC SET FOR OCTOBER 19TH
EDINBURG, TX-Speakers from The University of Texas-Pan American men's
basketball coaching staff and the Rio Grande Valley Coaches Association
will be featured at the UTPA Bronc Basketball Clinic, set for Saturday,
October 19th at 12 noon at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The clinic is free for all boys and girls basketball coaches and their
players.
Texas-Pan American Head Coach Bob Hoffman and UT Pan American Associate
Head Coach Robert Davenport will speak at the clinic. Hoffman was named
National NCAA Division I Independent Coach of the Year as the Broncs
had their best season in 12 years last season, finishing with a 20-10
record. UTPA ranked 19th nationally in field goal percentage (47.7 per
cent) and 24th nationally in scoring (79.6 per cent). Senior guard Mire
Chatman (Garland, TX/South Garland HS/Southwestern Christian HS) was
named All-District, All-Independent, Independent Defensive Player of
the Year, Independent Player of the Year, and a Mid-Major All-American,
while finishing third in Division I in both scoring (26.2 points per
game) and steals (3.6 points per game). Senior center Marcus Quinn (Midwest
City, OK/Choctaw HS/Eastern Oklahoma State) and current senior Kevin
Mitchell (Copperas Cove, TX/Copperas Cove HS/McLennan CC) also earned
All-Independent honors.
Hoffman and Davenport will be joined as speakers by two coaches from
the Rio Grande Valley Coaches Association. Following the clinic, the
Broncs will have a practice session, which everyone at the clinic is
encouraged to attend.
Pizza and soft drinks will be provided free of charge. Anyone interested
in attending the clinic should RSVP to the UTPA men's basketball office
by telephone at 956-381-2870 by Wednesday, October 16th.
"We feel like it's a great opportunity for us, as
a regional university, to serve the whole Rio Grande Valley," said
Hoffman. "It also gives us an opportunity to be involved with high
school and middle school coaches."
