Immediate Release: September 25, 2002 BRONCS NAME TREVINO ASSISTANT BASEBALL COACH EDINBURG, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American has completed its baseball staff with the addition of a new assistant coach. Kiki Trevino, who has played and coached throughout the Rio Grande Valley at the high school, collegiate and professional level, including at The University of Texas-Pan American, will join Head Coach Willie Gawlik and Assistant Coach Johnny Johnson as a member of the staff. A native of Alamo and a UT Pan American graduate, Trevino earned All-Area, All-Rio Grande Valley and All-South Texas honors in baseball at PSJA High School, where he graduated in the top five per cent of his class. He was named All-Sun Belt Conference and earned the Jody Ramsey Award while pitching for the Broncs as a senior in 1997. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Kinesiology, Trevino pitched for the Rio Grande Valley Whitewings of the Texas-Louisiana League. He then began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Valley View High School. Returning to his alma mater, Trevino was a graduate assistant at UTPA for two seasons, before accepting a position as an assistant coach at the University of Texas-Brownsville/Texas Southmost College. He spent last summer as an assistant coach for the West Division champion Edinburg Roadrunners of the Central League. Trevino also served as a teaching assistant in the UTPA Department of Health and Kinesiology, while earning a Master of Education in Kinesiology at Texas-Pan American. "I'm glad that Kiki is joining our staff," said Gawlik. "He is an alum, he is from the area, and he has recruiting and collegiate coaching experience as well as professional coaching experience, which are both pluses. Kiki is a good fit for our program, and we're glad that we have our staff in place." "I have a lot of great memories here," said Trevino. "It's always good to come back to where you played, and where you received your degree. "I was honored to have been a part of (former Head) Coach Al's (Ogletree) 1200th win, and I was here when we went to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. Coach Gawlik has everything headed in the right direction, and everything is really positive. This is a great opportunity, and I'm looking forward to it." BA-01-03 |
