Pan American Women’s Tennis Wins Two Flights at UT San Antonio Fall
Invitational SAN
ANTONIO – Maria Fernandez won singles and doubles titles to highlight
play for the University of Texas-Pan American at the University of
Texas-San Antonio Fall Invitational Sunday. Fernandez,
a junior from Cordova, Mexico, took the Flight Two Championship by
defeating Felice Sanchez, 6-3, 6-0.
The singles title was her first of the season.
She later teamed with Celine Merlini to win the Flight One
Doubles Championship, over Tritt and Convery of Southwest Texas State,
8-4. It was the second
doubles title of the season for Fernandez and Merlini. Merlini, a
freshman from Vevey, Switzerland, took second in the Flight One Singles
Bracket, falling to Julie Colin of UT-San Antonio, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, in the
championship match. Eve
Nickelson also took second in Flight Three, falling to Eva Soderkvist of
UT-San Antonio, 6-4, 6-3 in the championship match.
Sagnite Garcia took runner-up honors in Flight Four Singles,
losing to Phyllis Wilunda of UT-San Antonio, 6-3, 6-1, in the final. Freshman
Alana Breen took third in the Flight Five singles, defeating Ellian
Rohrbacher of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by default.
In Flight Six Singles, Jessica Brown took fifth place, while
Mireya Villareal finished in fifth place in Flight Seven. The Lady Broncs will wrap up play during their fall season at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships in College Station on November 3-5. |
