 U TPA Tennis Teams Play Host to Alcorn State and Lamar

EDINBURG - The University of Texas-Pan American men’s tennis team plays host to Alcorn State and Lamar University (3-12, 1-4 SLC) on Friday, March 30, 2001 at the Orville Cox Tennis Courts.  The first match, versus Alcorn State, will begin at 12:00 p.m. while the second match of the day will start at 5:30 p.m. and pit our men against Southland Conference foes, Lamar University. 

The women’s team will also see action at home this Friday taking on Alcorn State at 10:00 a.m..    The Lady Broncs will return to action on Saturday, March 31, 2001 when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 5:00PM. 

“As we enter the home stretch the men’s team is playing some of their best tennis and it has been our goal all season to peak as we get closer to the Southland Conference Tournament,” said Head Coach Scott Howard. “With three conference matches in the next week, we are excited that we are playing some of our best tennis.” 

The Bronc men’s tennis team is riding a three-match win streak and is now 10-12 on the season.  Their 10 wins on the season are the most for the Broncs since the 1993 season, when they finished 10-9.  In their most recent match, the Broncs defeated Western Kentucky 5-2 this past Sunday.  Leading the way for the Broncs is senior Juan Saiz who has tallied a career high 15 singles wins so far this season.

On the women’s side, the Lady Broncs have a combined team record of 6-12.  The six victories are the most for a Lady Bronc squad since the 1995 season, when they finished 8-14.  The Lady Broncs are led by freshman Celine Merlini who owns a 17-8 record at the number 1 singles spot.
