| Monday, April 30, 2001 UTPA Results UTPA Athletes Enjoy Weekend of Competition at Oregon Invitational Rios-Handy hits NCAA provisional mark in Steeplechase EUGENE, Oregon - The University of Texas-Pan American men's and women's track & field teams competed at the Oregon Invitational in Eugene, Oregon - April 27-28. Senior Perla Rios-Handy (La Porte, TX) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships in the 3000m Steeplechase. Rios-Handy placed 7th overall in the event, and lowered her school record to 11:07.76. Sophomore Galina Ojeda (Brownsville, TX) finished 5th overall in the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 1:03.76, while lowering her record for the third time this season. Freshman Rashaad Ben (Austin, TX), eclipsed Nick Montanez's 1994 110-meter high hurdle record (14.78), with a time of 14.74, to finish 5th. Junior pole vaulter, Rachel Drury (Moscow, ID), also eclipsed her own school record by clearing 10'06", and tied for 5th overall in the event. Also competing this past weekend was sophomore Martin Longoria (Edcouch, TX) who finished sixth in the 800m run in a time of 1:59.00. Teammate sophomore Israel Arroyo (Houston, TX) placed 16th overall in the 5000m run with a time of 16:41.93. Sophomore Robert Lopez (Mission, TX) finished 13th in the hammer throw with a distance of 157'07". Freshman Valerie Summa (Smithville, MO) placed fifth in the high jump with a leap of 5'04.25" and freshman Amy Moses (Edinburg, TX) finished 17th overall in the discus throw with a toss of 120'05". UTPA returns to action May 18-19, to compete at the LSU Last-Chance Qualifying meet in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. |
