Edcouch Native Angelica Garza Signs with UT Pan American Cross Country and Track and Field Program

EDINBURG – Edcouch native Angelica Garza signed a national letter of intent to run for the University of Texas-Pan American cross country and track and field teams for the 2000-01 season, it was announced on Friday.

Garza was a six-sport athlete at La Villa High School, participating in cross country, track, basketball, volleyball, tennis and cheerleading.  The versatile athlete was a three-time All-32AA selection in basketball and a two-time honoree in volleyball.

But it was in cross country and track and field that she excelled.  Twice she earned bronze medallist honors in the 800 meter at the AA State Championships.  She was the district and regional champion in the 800 meter in each of the last three years.  She was a three-time district champion in the 1600 meter and took sixth in the AA State Meet in 1999.  She was twice named to the All-Valley team and was the 1998 Valley Newcomer of the Year.

“Angie’s competitive nature will pay off in college after having excelled as a multi-sport athlete in high school,” said Head Coach Dana Colligan Gutierrez.  “She’s an outstanding student-athlete who will contribute a lot to our teams on the track, in the classroom and throughout the campus.  She’ll be one to watch in college.”

Angelica Garza joins previous track and field signees Rashaad Ben, Valerie Summa and April Hipolito, who have already joined the Broncs and Lady Broncs for the 2000-01 season.
