Troy State Holds Off UT-Pan American Rally for 73-72 Win in Women's Basketball Action
TROY, Ala. - For the second time this season, the Texas-Pan American women's basketball team used a furious second-half rally to erase a double-digit deficit and take the lead against Troy State. For the second time this season, the Lady Trojans were up to the challenge. Led by five players in double figures, Troy State (4-5) escaped a strong run by the Lady Broncs (1-13) at Trojan Arena on Thursday, winning 73-72 on Aja Gates' layup with eight seconds to play.
Gates finished with 12 points to lead the way for Troy State, which snapped a two-game losing skid.
"I was pleased with our effort," Troy State coach Jerry Hester said. "We didn't play well at times, but we managed to get the shots when we needed them most. I thought our girls played hard."
Troy State led by as many as 17 points on Nov. 19 when the teams met in Edinburg, Texas, only to see the Lady Broncs roar back and force overtime. On Thursday, the Lady Trojans led by as many as 15 points in the second half before a 23-5 run gave Texas-Pan American a 66-63 lead with 6:22 to play.
The teams exchanged leads from that point before senior guard Chandra Bradford found Gates wide open under the basket for the game-winner.
Freshman guard Chaquita Alexander also added 12 points for Troy State, while Tomekia Golatte added 11 points and 10 rebounds. Sharin Milner added 10 points and 10 assists for the Lady Trojans, her second double-double of the season.
Lea Valdez led the Broncs with 18 points. Alexandra Gravel also had 13 points and Cheveron Terry added 10.
The UT-Pan American Women return to action on January 3rd when they travel to Pittsburgh, Penn., to take on Duquesne University at 7 p.m.
