UT-San Antonio Overcomes First Half to Defeat UT-Pan American 58-48
EDINBURG -- The University of Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners defeated the University of Texas-Pan American Lady Broncs 58-48 Tuesday night in women’s basketball action at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
UTPA went in the dressing at the half leading 27-23, but the Roadrunners overcame a sluggish first half, and went on to outplay UTPA in the second half. The second half proved to be costly for the Lady Broncs as they were stifled by a strong defensive effort by UTSA.
Almost lost in the game was the stellar play of Michelle Smith, a freshman from Heritage Park High School in Vancouver, British Columbia, who played like a seasoned veteran Smith led the Lady Broncs with 14 points pulled down 13 rebounds en-route her first career double-double. “You don’t see many freshman in the country play like that,” said Rod Lee, Assistant coach for the Lady Broncs. “She has been outstanding in terms of what she has done.”
Latifa Northern hit a jumper with 14:26 left in the game to put UTSA ahead 32-31 and the Roadrunners never looked back. With the 1:35 left in the game Alexandra Gravel drained a three-point shot to put the Lady Broncs within six points but were unable to get any closer.
Keelah Wilson scored 27 points to lead all scorers, while pulling down nine rebounds. Latifa Northern was complimented Wilson by adding 10 points and pulling down seven rebounds for the Roadrunners.
The Lady Broncs return to action Thursday December 9, 1999 when they entertain the Golden Eagles at the UTPA Fieldhouse with tip-off at 7:00 p.m. The Roadrunners face Schreiner College on December 11, in San Antonio with tip-off at 7:00 p.m.
