UT-Pan American Women's Basketball Picks Up First Win, 68-61 Over UT-San Antonio
SAN ANTONIO – Alexis Williams scored all 11 of her points in the second half and the University of Texas-Pan American held off a late charge to pick up its first win of the season, 68-61, over the University of Texas-San Antonio, Friday night at the UTSA Convocation Center.
Williams, a junior from Houston, helped the Broncs on both ends of the floor, as she scored 11 points and dished out four assists, while she had five steals. As a team the Broncs had 18 steals, tying for the third highest single-game total in school history. Freshman Naima Williams continued her strong play with a team-high 14 points and seven rebounds. Alexandra Gravel had 13 points and six assists, tops on the team.
The Broncs broke out of the gates quickly, taking a 18-5 lead just 5:39 into the game. But their hot shooting hands went cold after that, scoring just one bucket over the next five minutes. The Roadrunners went on a 21-4 run to take a 26-22 lead with 6:38 left in the first half. Keelah Wilson did most of the legwork during the run, scoring 10 of her 14 first half points, several of which came on offensive putbacks. Wilson finished the game with 20 points, tops on the Roadrunners. But the Broncs bench kept them in it as Naima Williams, Lea Valdez and Rachel Friedeck all had quality minutes late in the half, holding the Roadrunners to just a 32-30 lead at the break.
UTPA broke away midway through the second half, going on a 16-8 run to take a 55-46 lead. The Roadrunners free throw shooting kept them in the game and they even cut the lead to just one with 1:06 left, but the Broncs held on for a seven-point win.
The win was the first of the season for UTPA as they improved to 1-2 going into a Saturday afternoon matchup against Big 12 opponent Texas A&M in College Station. Game time is 2:00 p.m. The Roadrunners fell to 1-2. The two teams will meet again on December 7th in Edinburg.
