EDINBURG – Alex Deedra had 20 points, leading a trio of Lady Eagles in double figures as the University of North Texas defeated the University of Texas-Pan American 78-65 in women’s basketball action Sunday afternoon at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

Deedra made 8-of-11 shots from the field and was 4-of-7 from the free throw line.  She also had seven rebounds.  Guard Rosalyn Reades had a double-double for the Eagles with 13 points and 12 rebounds.  Jalle Mitchell scored 14 points and had a team-high four assists.  Erin Buttery led a trio of Lady Broncs in double figures with 15 points.  Alexis Williams had 14 points and Alexandra Gravel had 12 points.

North Texas came out of the gates strong, taking a 23-13 lead on the strength of a 13-4 run at the 9:12 mark of the first half.  But the Broncs came back, cutting the lead to just four points on a jumper by Gravel with 1:54 left in the first half.  North Texas then took a 35-29 lead into the locker room.

The Eagles outscored the Broncs 7-2 to start the second half to take an 11-point edge.  The Broncs cut the margin to five several times, but could get no closer and the Eagles free throw shooting down the stretch put the game out of reach.  For the game the Eagles shot 73.3% (22-30) from the charity stripe.

“Free throws and rebounds win basketball games,” said UTPA Head Coach Kathy Halligan.  “The biggest thing in this ball game was to keep them (North Texas) off the boards.  They had 13 offensive rebounds and probably 10 of those were put-backs.  We gave up 13 offensive rebounds, we missed 13 free throws and we had 22 turnovers.  Those three things are what hurt us.”

For the game, North Texas shot 45.2% (28-62) from the field, while UTPA shot 35.6% (21-59).  The Broncs also had 22 turnovers compared with just 17 for the Eagles.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 2-0 on the young season, while the Broncs fell to 0-2.  UTPA will return to action on Wednesday, November 24th at the University of Texas-San Antonio at 7:00 p.m.
