EDINBURG – Shaquanda Thompson scored 21 points and Kristin Rogers added 20 to lead Texas A&M-Corpus Christi past the University of Texas-Pan American 76-57 in women’s basketball action Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

The Lady Broncs ran out to an early 16-3 lead behind strong shooting and pressure defense.  The Islanders responded with a 24-5 run over the next 10 minutes to take the lead at the half 27-24.  TAMUCC came out strong to start the second half as well, using an 11-2 run to move their lead to 38-28.  But UTPA didn’t give up, going on a 19-9 run to take a 51-50 lead.  But it was all Corpus Christi after that as the Islanders finished the game on a 26-6 run.

Also scoring in double figures for the Islanders was Detra Johnson who had 17 points and a team-high nine rebounds.  Rachel Grayson scored 12 points.  Lea Valdez led the way for the Lady Broncs with 17 points.  Alexandra Gravel had 12 points, including four three-point baskets, and Ashere’ Thigpen had a career high 13 points.

The Islanders finished their inaugural season with a 14-12 record, while UTPA fell to 6-20.  The Lady Broncs return to action on February 25th when they travel to Houston to take on the University of Houston at 7 p.m.
