Lady Broncs Continue Strong Play, But Fall to Belmont, 71-62
NASHVILLE, TENN. -- Four University of University of Texas-Pan American players scored in double figures, but Belmont was able to hold off a late charge and defeated the Lady Broncs 71-62 in women's basketball action at Striplin Coliseum Thursday night.
Belmont ran out to an 11-point halftime lead (42-31) behind strong shooting (.46.7% from the field). But the Lady Broncs came back strong in the second half, outshooting the Bruins 41.9% to 31.0%. The Lady Broncs cut the lead to less than 10 points, but were unable to overcome the early deficit.
Sophomore Alexandra Gravel had a strong game with team highs in points (15), rebounds (8) and assists (7) in 35 minutes of play. Freshman Naima continued her strong play this season with 14 points and seven rebounds. Cheveron Terry and Ashere' Thigpen also scored in double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively, for the Broncs. Jessica Matson led a trio of Bruins in double figures with 14 points.
The Lady Broncs will wrap up their three-game road trip with a matchup against first-year team Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Tip-off will be at 5:00 p.m. and the game will be the first of a men's-women's doubleheader with the TAMUCC men and the UTPA men tipping off at 7:30 p.m.
