Naima Williams Double-Double Leads UTPA Past St. Edward’s in Women’s Basketball
EDINBURG -- Naima Williams posted her second career double-double, leading the University of Texas-Pan American Women's Basketball team to a 70-57 win over St. Edward's University Saturday night at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Williams, a freshman from Houston, scored 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in recording her second double-double. She also had a double-double against Troy State in the Lady Broncs season opener. Williams set a school single-game record with an 88.9% (8-9) shooting percentage from the field. Williams leads the team in rebounding with 5.1 per game.
Also scoring in double figures for the Broncs was Alexandra Gravel with 17 points and Lea Valdez with 15 points. Edinburg native Shelly Duffey led the way for the Hilltoppers with 16 points and seven steals.
The Broncs came out of the gates quickly, taking a 9-4 lead. The Hilltoppers responded with an 8-0 run to take a 12-9 lead. The team battled back and forth over the next five minutes until UTPA went on a 10-1 run to take back the lead at 22-18. The Lady Broncs went into the lockeroom with a 39-34 lead. The Broncs shot a season best 63.6% (14-22) from the field in the first half.
UTPA again came out of the lockeroom inspired to start the second half, going on a 16-3 run to start the half. The 55-39 lead would never be seriously headed and UTPA cruised down the stretch. The Broncs turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, holding the Hilltoppers to just six field goals made and 17.1% (6-35) shooting from the field.
The Broncs improved to 3-16 on the season with the win and have won two of their last three. The win was also the first this season at home for the Lady Broncs. St. Edward’s fell to 10-4 overall. UTPA will return to action on Thursday, January 27th, at 7:05 p.m. at Centenary College. St. Edward’s returns to action on Tuesday, January 25th at 6:00 p.m. at Angelo State.
