UTPA Releases Women’s 2001-2002 Basketball Schedule

EDINBURG, TX – It is with great excitement and anticipation that The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announces the 2001-02 Women’s Basketball schedule.  The Lady Broncs boast a 15-game home schedule that is sure to impress the fans.  Coach Nicholls and her staff are looking to build upon their record setting season win total of 11 NCAA victories in the upcoming 2001-02 season.

For the first time in UTPA history, Karin Nicholls and her staff will be hosting the UTPA Lady Bronc Tip-Off Classic.  This tournament will feature the University of Arkansas-Little Rock (SunBelt Conference), Southeast Missouri State University (Ohio Valley Conference) and 2001 Big Sky Conference Tournament finalist, University of Montana.  The tournament will be held at the UTPA Fieldhouse November 16th and 17th.

The Lady Broncs will play 15 home dates in all with an exhibition against the Houston Jaguars on November 4th at 7:30pm in the UTPA Fieldhouse.  Also included on the home schedule are UTEP, Oral Roberts, New Mexico State, Arkansas State and independent rival, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

“I am extremely excited about our upcoming schedule.  We were able to put together a schedule that will give us 15 home games including the first-ever Lady Bronc Tip-Off Classic,” said second year Head Coach, Karin Nicholls.

When the Lady Broncs hit the road they will face off against some of the best teams in the country including Weber State, Wyoming, Rhode Island, Iowa, and Kent State.  UTPA will be participating in the University of Iowa Tournament in Iowa City on December 7th and 8th.  The Lady Broncs will open against host Iowa on the 7th at a time to be announced.

“We have some high quality opponents that were 2001 NCAA tournament teams last year including Iowa, Kent State and Oral Roberts,” said Nicholls.  “This schedule will give us a chance to measure ourselves early against some great teams, while hopefully allowing us to turn the corner as a program”.

Nicholls enters her second season as the Lady Bronc Head Coach.  Also returning is her top assistant, Carol Russell.  New to this year’s staff are Kate Galligan and Megan Kahn.  Galligan comes to UTPA from The University of Pittsburgh where she was an assistant for three seasons.  Kahn played for Nicholls at Truman State and served as the Assistant Academic Coordinator in the UTPA Athletic Department while also assuming the role of Administrative Assistant with the Lady Broncs.
