2001 CORPUS CHRISTI, TX–The University of Texas-Pan
American volleyball team will take a nine-match winning streak into the
off-season. The Lady Broncs won their ninth consecutive match
in their season finale, defeating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 23-30,
30-26, 22-30, 30-25 and 15-13, at the Islanders’ on-campus gym. The victory was UTPA’s 12th in their last 14
matches, and their 14th in their last 17 matches. Sophomore setter Shawnda McDowell (Hurst, TX/L.D.
Bell HS) had seven kills,
43 assists, six blocks and a .462 hitting percentage for the Lady
Broncs. Freshman outside hitter Sandy Darway (San Luis Obispo, CA/Arroyo
Grande HS) had 19 kills, 16 digs and four blocks, sophomore outside
hitter Jaclyn Muszynski (Walnut, CA/Walnut HS) had 17 kills and 16 digs,
while sophomore middle blocker Mindy Hubik (Bedford, TX/L.D.Bell HS) had
10 kills and five blocks. Melanie Travis had 21 kills for TAMU-CC, while
Lauren Smith added 13. “We went the distance, and it was a great way to
end the season,” said UTPA Head Coach Dave Thorn. “We were
physically worn down, but when push came to shove, we made the plays we
needed to make. I’m happy with how we responded, especially the way we
finished the season, and the fact that we have everyone returning next
year.” The Lady Broncs concluded their season with a
