22, 2000 UT Pan American Men’s Tennis Team Opens Season with Success BEAUMONT- Four players won their
opening round match for the University of Texas-Pan American on the first day of
the Brentwood Intercollegiate Tennis Invitational hosted by Lamar University on
the Cardinal Courts Friday morning. In Flight “B”, freshman Alex
Cequea of Houston, earned his first two collegiate victories in by defeating
Thatcher Cribbs of Lamar University 7-6, 6-2. Cequea next defeated Sal Tawell of
Oklahoma Baptist 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the third round. Weslaco native, Brandon Meiners,
also earned his first collegiate victory by defeating Beau Dorrell who played
unattached 6-0, 6-1. In the second
round, Tanner Payne of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi narrowly defeated Meiners
6-4, 7-5. In Flight “A”, Enrique Bastante, and Matt Gower advanced to the second round by default. In the second round, Bastante was scheduled to face Bruno Puzzi of Louisiana-Lafayette but Puzzi was unable to continue and retired propelling Bastante to the semi-finals. Gower lost to David Corrie of UT-Arlington 6-0, 6-1. In
doubles action, Bastante and Cequea advanced to the second round by default.
The tandem of Pierre Cantu and Brandon Meiners lost a close match to Max
Lawrence and Trent Broach 9-7, of Abilene Christian University.
The Broncs continue tournament play tomorrow on the Cardinal Courts starting at 9:00 a.m. |
