UT Pan American Men’s Tennis Falls to #5 Texas A&M in Spring Season Opener, 7-0

COLLEGE STATION – Fifth ranked Texas A&M University defeated the University of Texas-Pan American 7-0 in men’s tennis action Friday afternoon.  The match was the first of the 2001 season for UTPA.

The Aggies ran out to a 1-0 lead when they swept the doubles portion of the match.  However, the Broncs kept close, falling by just 8-6 scores in both the number one and number three doubles matches.  Matt Gower and Kareem Abdullah fell at number one, while Enrique Bastante and Pierre Cantu dropped the 8-6 decision at number three.

The Broncs fought valiantly in singles as well, but were unable to pick up a point.  Gower was strong at number one singles for UTPA, but dropped a 6-3, 6-4, decision to Cody Hubbell of A&M.  Bastante was also tough at number two singles, but couldn’t get over the hump against Keith From, falling 7-6, 6-3.   Juan Saiz dropped by a 6-4, 6-1, score at number three singles against Dumitru Caradima.

With the loss, UTPA falls to 0-1 on the season.  The Broncs will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Houston to face off against Southland Conference foe Southeastern Louisiana at 2 p.m.  The match will be the Broncs first ever as an affiliate member of the Southland Conference.
