KAREEM ABDULLAH NAMED PLAYER OF THE
WEEK
PLANO, TX-For the second time this
season, an athlete from The University of Texas-Pan American has claimed the
Southland Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week award.
Senior Kareem Abdullah (Clarendon, TX/Clarendon HS/Seward County CC) has been
honored.
Abdullah
was chosen for his play last. He went 4-0 last weekend, and won twice as UTPA
defeated Lamar, 5-2, in their first Southland Conference match of the season.
Abdullah
defeated Nebojsa Murisic of Lamar, 7-6, 6-3, at number three singles Sunday
afternoon, and teamed with Matt Gower to defeat Murisic and Christian Olivier,
8-3, at number one doubles. Saturday, he won twice in a 6-1 victory against
Alcorn State. Abdullah defeated Chris Morgan, 6-3, 6-1 at number three singles,
and teamed with Gower to defeat Morgan and Martin Knobloch, 8-1, at number one
doubles.
“It’s
an honor, and I was pleased to see Kareem win,” said UTPA Head Coach Todd
Chapman. “Kareem did a great job showing senior leadership on a long road
trip, winning all four of his matches. That’s the kind of leadership we’ll
need this spring, since we play a tough schedule.”
The
Broncs are 3-2 overall, 1-0 in Southland Conference play. They will return to
action when they visit Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday, February 23.
