LADY BRONCS FALL TO UTSA
SAN ANTONIO, TX –The University of Texas-Pan American tennis team dropped a pair of matches to the University of Texas-San Antonio Friday. The Broncs fell to the Roadrunners, 6-1, and the Lady Broncs dropped a 7-0 decision at the UTSA Tennis Center. Freshman Filip Koziell (Calgary, AB/Bishop Carroll HS) was UTPA’s only double winner. He defeated Dennis Andrade at number three singles, 7-6, 6-1, and teamed with freshman Jeremy Salvo (Coquitlam, BC/Centennial Secondary) for an 8-2 win over Andrade and Ricardo Almeida at number one doubles. Brett Veale and Max Dounaev of UTSA defeated junior Matt Gower (Somerset, England/Kings of Wessex HS/St. Francis-PA) and senior Kareem Abdullah (Clarendon, TX/Clarendon HS/Seward County CC), 9-7 at number two doubles, giving the Roadrunners the crucial doubles point. “Filip and Jeremy played very well in their doubles match, but they won the number two doubles match on their fourth match point, and it gave them a lot of momentum going into the singles,” said UTPA Head Coach Todd Chapman. “It was a very close match, and we had the opportunity to win it and didn’t. If we did, I felt it would have given us momentum going into the singles. In the women’s match, we played pretty well in doubles. We were just beaten by a better team.” The Lady Broncs dropped to 6-14, while the Broncs fell to 7-8, 2-3 in Southland Conference play. The UTSA men improved to 10-8, 4-1 in the SLC, while the UTSA women improved to 11-6. The Broncs will travel to Lamar Tuesday to meet the Cardinals and Southeastern Louisiana. Both teams will play at home next Thursday-the men in an exhibition match against Laredo Community College at 10 a.m. and the women against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 4 p.m. UTPA
